New Delhi: The Congress on Friday said the "arrogant" Narendra Modi government, which thrust a deeply flawed GST on the country in haste, was forced to acknowledge its mistake because of the groundswell of opposition in poll-bound Gujarat.

As word trickled in from the GST meet in Guwahati about a drastic cut in taxes on many items, Rahul Gandhi tweeted: "Acknowledge your incompetence, shed your arrogance and listen to the people of India. Don't waste India's time with lip service. Correct the fundamental flaw in GST architecture to give India a Genuine Simple Tax."

The Congress vice-president added: "We will not allow BJP to impose Gabbar Singh Tax on India. They cannot break the back of small & medium businesses, crush the informal sector and destroy millions of jobs."

Rahul has built enormous pressure on the Centre through sustained interactions with traders and industrialists during his Gujarat visits. Asked on Friday if finance minister Arun Jaitley should resign, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said: "Why he alone?"

Singhvi added: "The government follows the wisdom of 'think-aim-shoot' in reverse order. Despite our repeated warnings against imposing this Gabbar Singh Tax in a hurry, the arrogant government went ahead. Not only the Congress, many states raised several questions in the GST Council, too. It has become such a mess but, finally, the government woke up fearing defeat in the Gujarat election."

Former finance minister P. Chidambaram appeared to pre-empt the developments at the GST meet in Guwahati through tweets on Friday: "Congress Finance Ministers' letter exposes the structural flaws in the design & implementation of GST, the panic stricken Government can no longer duck these issues. Thanks to Gujarat elections, the Government is forced to heed advice of opposition and experts on flaws in implementation of GST."
