Nagaon, June 20: A farmer stabbed his wife and two children to death at Panjuri Langhing Krogaon, a Karbi-dominated village in Karbi Anglong district, just after midnight last night and then surrendered before police.
Naliram Kro, 40, stabbed his wife Moina Hansepi, 35, son Anand, 6, and daughter Manjula, 4, while they were sleeping, the police said.
A resident of the locality, Sarthe Kro, said, "The couple had been quarrelling since evening over some domestic problem. The quarrel ended around 10pm and we thought they had gone to bed. About 12.30am, Naliram came out of his house shouting that he had killed everybody and was going to surrender."
It took Naliram 90 minutes to reach Dokmoka police station, which is 16km from his village, with the blood-stained dao (machete). The village is 70km from Diphu, the district headquarters.
Dokmoka police station officer in-charge Jayanta Sinha said Naliram, who had rushed to the police station with the dao, pleaded with the constable on duty outside to call an officer before whom he could surrender.
"I reached my office immediately and took the dao from Naliram. He was brought to the village where he had killed his family. In the presence of the village defence personnel and villagers, all the three bodies were brought to Diphu for post-mortem," Sinha told The Telegraph.
Naliram was remanded in judicial custody this evening.
Anand was a Class I student while Manjula used to go to the local Anganwadi centre.
Villagers said Naliram suspected his wife was having an extra-marital affair with a villager who was a frequent visitor to their residence. "This happened because of his suspicion. We told him it was not true but he was too consumed by jealousy," another villager, Birti, said.
