Bangalore: The CPM has decided not to seek an explanation from its elected representatives who were present at a meeting of Malayalam actors where Kerala's most powerful guild of cinema professionals decided to re-induct an actor accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a co-star.

The decision was taken at a CPM state secretariat meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

Among the actors who are CPM members and were present at the meeting where actor Dileep was re-inducted into cinema guild AMMA are actors Innocent, the Lok Sabha member from Thrissur and former AMMA president, and Mukesh, the party MLA from Kollam. Actor K.B. Ganesh Kumar is a member of the Kerala Congress (B), which is part of the ruling Left Democratic Front, and represents Pathanapuram in the Assembly.

The CPM defended its members who were subjected to widespread criticism for not opposing the decision to re-induct Dileep.

A CPM statement questioned the intent behind accusing the Left's elected representatives who are part of AMMA. "Accusing only the Left representatives is based on wrong intentions," the party said.

The party also stated that it was wrong to assume that attempts were being made to divide AMMA to ensure women's safety. The CPM reiterated that it stood for women's rights and safety.#The CPM's decision not to seek an explanation has come at a time even politburo member Brinda Karat has urged the actors to break their silence on the issue. State ministers and the women's commission had slammed AMMA members for not stopping Dileep's re-induction.

The actress who survived the assault and three of her colleagues resigned from AMMA on Wednesday to protest the move to take back Dileep, who was expelled in July last year soon after his arrest in the case.

Three other prominent actresses on Thursday wrote to AMMA seeking an emergent session to discuss issues surrounding the re-induction and what the guild had done for the survivor.

While no one from AMMA reacted to the developments, sources said the outfit might agree to the emergent meeting once superstar Mohanlal, the president of the guild, returns from his shooting in London.

Although Dileep has written to AMMA stating he would rather wait until proven innocent before returning to the guild, superstar Mohanlal has become the main target as it was at the first general body meeting he chaired as president that the decision to re-induct Dileep was taken.

Youth Congress workers marched to the Kochi home of Mohanlal on Friday and staged a sit-in seeking his resignation as AMMA president. They also urged the actor to relinquish his title of lieutenant colonel (honorary) of the Territorial Army that was accorded to him in 2009.

The protesters laid wreathes at the gate of Mohanlal's palatial home, signifying the symbolic death of AMMA, and shouted slogans against him and some other actors such as Innocent, Mukesh and Ganesh Kumar.

Barring a gardener, none from Mohanlal's family was at home during the protest.

The All India Youth Federation, affiliated to the CPI, had burnt effigies of Mohanlal in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

Support continued to pour in for the actresses, including the survivor, who are taking on the powerful AMMA, often criticised as male chauvinist.

Kerala Sahithya Akademi president Vaishakan lauded the actresses fighting for their rights. "These actresses are the real heroines of renaissance."

"What AMMA did is the biggest expression of male chauvinism," Vaishakan said.
