Central administrative tribunal chairman Justice L. Narasimha Reddy on Tuesday said he was not allowed to board an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad despite having a boarding pass, prompting an apology from the airline the former judge branded “a rogue in the air”.

Reddy was to take an IndiGo flight to Bangalore on Monday morning when he was stopped from boarding.

The former chief justice of Patna High Court said the airline also cancelled his ticket for the connecting flight from Bangalore to Hubli. He said he would take up the matter with aviation minister Suresh Prabhu and director-general of civil aviation B.S. Bhullar.

An IndiGo spokesperson said the airline had contacted Reddy to “express our apologies”. “IndiGo is committed to courteous and hassle-free service for all of our customers and we sincerely regret that we failed to meet our service standards in this situation. We are reviewing our processes to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.”

Reddy said his flight was scheduled to depart at 4.55am on Monday. “I cleared the security process at 04.10 hours and went to the VIP lounge.… When the boarding was announced, I was buying a water bottle,” he told PTI.

The CAT chairman said the airline soon announced the final call for boarding and, by the time he reached the boarding gate, it had closed. “I requested them but they were adamant and did not permit me (to board the flight).”

A flight can take off before time but only when all the passengers have boarded. In this case, he said, the flight left early without taking all the passengers.

Reddy said he took a 6am SpiceJet flight to Bangalore since the connecting flight was at 8.10am. “(On reaching Bangalore) I got to know that they (IndiGo) had cancelled my Hubli flight (ticket) also,” he said. “It is cheating.”

IndiGo, he added, has “become a rogue in the air”.
