New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Wednesday will lay the ground for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and begin the BJP's campaign, party leaders said and added that they did not expect any big-bang announcement.

Although the corridors of power are abuzz with talk of the Prime Minister doling out added benefits to over 32 crore poor families holding bank accounts under the Jan-Dhan Yojana, including increased overdraft facilities and additional insurance cover, BJP leaders feel Modi will focus on what he has achieved in the past four years and talk about his plans for the future.

"Modiji doesn't need to woo voters, particularly the poor, by transferring money in their Jan-Dhan accounts. The poor know he is the only leader working for them," a BJP leader said. This leader felt there was no need for any significant announcement as the government had already "done a lot" for the all-round development of the country.

Party leaders said that whatever the Prime Minister says from the ramparts of the Red Fort would be closely followed by the BJP as it would lay the ground for the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

Although Modi is seen to be always in election mode, BJP leaders pointed out that this would be his last address to the nation before he faces the general election and so what he says hold importance.

"We feel Modiji will tell the country what his government has done so far. He will tell the people about his dream of building a New India by 2022 and send across the message that he needs another term to transform the country," a BJP leader said.

Some party leaders hope Modi will make an impassioned speech and tell the people how tirelessly he has worked for the country to convince the voters that there is no alternative to him and he deserves a second term.

"The Prime Minister will speak from his heart tomorrow. I feel it is going to be one of his best speeches that will strike an emotional chord with the people. He will win the hearts of the voters before the actual campaign begins," an MP from Uttar Pradesh said.

The BJP leaders feel Modi's personal popularity among the masses had grown, not diminished by any account, and people will vote for him again in 2019 without caring for individual candidates.

The BJP on Tuesday tried to dismiss reports that the government was planning to hold simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and 11 state Assemblies early next year.

"The party rejects any such misconception," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, referring to media reports. He drew attention to BJP chief Amit Shah's letter to the Law Commission to dismiss the idea of holding 11 state Assembly elections along with the Lok Sabha polls early next year. Patra said no such suggestion had been made in Shah's letter on Monday.

"In Amit Shahji's letter there is no mention of holding simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha and 11 state Assemblies," Patra said, rejecting source-based reporting by the media. He, however, stressed that the BJP firmly supported the idea of "one nation, one election" but wanted a consensus on the issue after discussion.

"Amit Shahji has given a call for discussion and said that if there is a consensus then it would be in national interest," Patra said.
