Actor Akshay Kumar on Friday visited North Block, met Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and proposed a special mobile app to help families of martyred soldiers and security personnel.
During talks with Mehrishi and senior officials of the Border Security Force, Kumar - who played a naval officer in Rustom - told them the app would allow donors to directly send money to the verified bank accounts of martyred soldiers' kin.
"We welcome Kumar's suggestion as the Centre is also planning to create a mobile app that seeks to directly connect the families of martyred soldiers with those who want to help them financially," said a ministry official.
As soon as he entered North Block, Kumar was mobbed by scores of ministry employees. Such was the commotion that top had to instructed security personnel to clear the staff from the corridors who had gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the Khiladi star.
Sources said the proposed app would have the names of martyred soldiers and account numbers of their family members.
According to the sources, Kumar initially wanted to design the app himself with permission from the Centre. "We told him that the government is also thinking along similar lines and his suggestions will be taken into consideration," another official said.
