Ab ki baar , better performer

Yogi Mahesh of the Bihar School of Yoga in Munger, who was recently appointed yoga teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya INS Chilka, Odisha, analyses for The Telegraph Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s performance on International Yoga Day. Yogi Mahesh evaluated the PM’s yoga postures last year as well

Prime Minister Narendra Modi fared remarkably well while performing the asanas and pranayamas at Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex on Tuesday, says Yogi Mahesh. “I will give 10 out of 10 to the PM in all the yoga and asana postures that he performed today. It appears that Modi has undergone rigorous yoga training in the last one year. This was a far more accomplished performance than last year,” said Yogi Mahesh, who watched Modi’s performance on YouTube on Tuesday

Trikonasana or the Triangle posture

  • Purpose: The exercise strengthens the calf and thigh and cures urinary functions apart from ensuring many other benefits, including spinal flexibility
  • How do you rate Modi? Excellent. I will give Modi five star rating...10 out of 10

Alert: People with slipped disc or sciatica should avoid doing it. Those who underwent surgery in abdominal area too should avoid it

Purna Titli Asan or Full butterfly pose

  • Purpose: Very useful for pregnant women. Ensures better health of the mother and child in the womb. It is useful for men too as it strengthens the reproductive system
  • How do you rate Modi? Modi did it well... it was flawless

Alert: People who have undergone surgery in the shoulder area should avoid it

Bhujangasana Half cobra pose

  • Purpose: Extremely helpful in relieving back pain, brings the body into proper shape
  • How do you rate Modi? Modi did it in a far better manner than he had last year

Alert: People with sciatica pain should avoid it

Salbhasan or Grasshopper pose

  • Purpose: It helps in curing back pain and digestive disorder
  • How did you rate Modi? Modi did it quite well

Part of Pavan Muktasan

  • Purpose: Keeps the digestive system in order and melts the fat around abdominal area. It also helps in curing acidity and several other stomach related diseases
  • How do you rate Modi? Modi did not do full course of Pavan Muktasan. He did a part of it... but whatever he did was far better

Alert: A normally healthy person should practise the full course of Pavan Muktasan

Vajrasan

  • Purpose: Helpful in digestion related troubles and keeps the spinal cord in shape and flexible. It is one of the best sitting postures for pranayam
  • How did you rate Modi? Modi’s sitting position was perfect. Unless you get into the habit of sitting in Vajrasan pose, you cannot do it for a long time. Modi did it well

Alert: People with pain in knee and osteoarthritis should avoid it

NADI SHODHAN

Kapalbhati

  • Purpose: It is very helpful in controlling diabetes apart from melting the fat around the abdominal area

Anulom Vilom

  • Purpose: Helps in controlling hypertension and asthma apart from several other health benefits
  • How do you rate Modi? Modi was excellent in performing both Kapalbhati and Anulom Vilom

Alert: Normally healthy people should do Kapalbhati and Anulom Vilom, the two pranayams in Nadi Shodhan

Bhramari

  • Purpose: It helps in curing migraine and eye related ailments
  • How do you rate Modi? Modi did it well

Alert: People who have undergone surgery in the ear or brain should avoid it for some time
