4 students jump into well

• VELLORE: Four Class IX girl students of Panapakkam Government Higher Secondary School here ended their lives on Friday by jumping into a well in a suicide pact after being allegedly chided by teachers for not being attentive in class, police said. Based on the preliminary inquiry, the headmistress and class teacher have been suspended, an official said. No suicide note has been found. PTI

Tigress found dead

• SHAHDOL: A tigress was found dead on Saturday in a forest near Madhya Pradesh's Kalyanpur village, 8km from the Shahdol district headquarters. The tigress had no external injuries, a forest official said. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of her death. PTI

3 held with guns

• COIMBATORE: Three people, hailing from Kerala, have been taken into custody in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district for allegedly possessing country-made guns and cartridges. PTI

Hospital to pay Rs 7 lakh

• RAIGARH: The district consumer forum here in Chhattisgarh has asked a private hospital to pay a compensation of Rs 7.14 lakh for "medical negligence" to the relatives of Chandrakant Sahu, who died during treatment on July 19. Sahu, suffering from kidney ailments, was undergoing treatment at the Fortis O.P. Jindal Hospital and Research Centre. PTI

• JAMMU: An undertrial prisoner, facing murder charges, escaped from police custody in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri on Saturday. Three cops have been suspended. PTI

Advisory on towing vehicles

• MUMBAI: Police should make an announcement on megaphone before towing away a vehicle from no-parking area and ask if its owner is around, according to new rules issued by Mumbai traffic police. Further, a vehicle should not be towed away from no-parking area if someone is sitting inside. Currently, a vehicle in no-parking area is towed away without enquiring if the owner is nearby and he has to visit the concerned police station to get it released by paying fine and towing charges. Cop hits biker

• KANYAKUMARI: A speeding biker has been injured when a traffic constable here struck him with a lathi while trying to stop him for not wearing a helmet. CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral. The constable has been suspended, pending inquiry. Rakesh, 25, who suffered a deep cut on his forehead, is being treated at a government hospital. PTI

• NEW DELHI: Delhi police, having a strength of around 80,000 personnel, employs less than four per cent of members from minority communities in its ranks, according to a report by the Delhi Minorities Commission. The annual report was released by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. PTI

Goa ferry boats

• PANAJI: The Portuguese-era diesel-powered ferry boats, which ply in Goa's inland routes, will give way to solar energy-backed vessels by June next year, a minister said on Saturday. The proposal for the ferry boats will be ready in the next six months and constructing them would take another six months, river navigation minister Sudin Dhavalikar said. He said the Goa government would soon release an advertisement seeking "expression of interest" to construct the boats. PTI

5 die in road crash

• MOGA: Five persons died when their jeep rammed into a tree after the driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to save a cyclist in Punjab's Moga district on Saturday, police said. PTI

Teachers booked

• YAVATMAL: At least 27 teachers from Maharashtra's Yavatmal district have been booked for allegedly refusing to do election-related duty, police said. The teachers refused to update the voters' list, an officer said. PTI
