Mumbai, Nov. 1: For the childhood sweethearts, it’s finally over.

Actor Hrithik Roshan and his estranged wife Sussanne Khan, who grew up together in Juhu, were granted divorce by a family court this morning, ending the 14-year-old marriage of the star couple who announced they were separating last December.

The couple arrived at the Bandra court with their lawyers Dipesh Mehta and Mrunalini Deshmukh around 10.30am. The proceedings were over in 15 minutes.

“They had filed a divorce petition on April 30 and the final order was given by the court today,” Deshmukh said. “It was divorce by mutual consent.”

The mutual consent plea had said the couple could no longer reside together because of irreconcilable differences and that efforts to resolve them had failed.

In divorce cases, courts usually allow a six-month cooling-off period for the couple to resolve differences before divorce is granted.

“It was done with trust, faith and respect for each other. The consent terms were not recorded in the court papers, but were mutually agreed. It means that whatever is required to be done will be done as per the mutual agreement,” Mehta said.

In July this year, social media were abuzz with reports that the actor had agreed to pay Rs 380 crore as alimony to his estranged wife. The reports were denied by the Roshans.

Asked about the custody of their two children, Hrehaan, 8, and Hridhaan, 6, Deshmukh said: “They have dealt with the separation very maturely and put a healthy parenting plan in place.”

The children now live with Sussanne at her Versova home after the couple ended months of speculation about their marriage and announced they were separating on December 14, 2013.

“This is my greatest tribute to love. Sussanne is and always will be the love of my life for the rest of my life. If her smiles are brighter without me, my love for her must accomplish that,” Hrithik had posted on his Facebook page.

Sussanne, too, had issued a statement. “We are two individuals who respect and care for each other and have made our own individual choices. We are parents to two wonderful kids and our responsibility remains to protect and take care of them. Nothing can change that. We would appreciate if we are given our privacy in such a time. Thank you for your warmth and concern for both of us and the family,” she said.

Hrithik, son of actor-director Rakesh Roshan, and Sussanne, daughter of actor, producer and director Sanjay Khan, had grown up together in Juhu in western Mumbai. They tied the knot in 2000 after a four-year courtship.

The actor had recently joined the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and cleaned up his neighbourhood in Juhu. “Wish my children ver here wth me 2watch their daddy help clean d neighbourhood. No better way 2 teach dan by example,” Hrithik had tweeted after his clean-up effort on October 25.
