In addition to the physical effects that Covid survivors have to live with, there are a host of neurological complications that the pandemic has led to. However, unlike many mainstream diseases, not too many people know much about this field of medicine. The questions to ask are: What is neurology? What kind of problems does this umbrella term refer to? And for people suffering from these problems, what are the treatment options and how simple or difficult are these? Dr Nikhil Prasun Singh, consultant neurologist at AMRI Hospitals Salt Lake is here with these and other answers.

In discussion with Dr. Nikhil Prasun

So, to answer the first question – what is neurology? Neurology is a large field of medicine that deals with conditions or disorders of specific nerves or of the nervous system in the human body. Dr Prasun elaborates by telling us that the common ailments that people should consult a neurologist for are persistent migraines, convulsions, paralysis or numbness in parts of the body. Persistent pains that travel from one part of the body to the other, such as descending pain from the hips to the legs or from the shoulders to the arms should also be treated by neurologists. There are also the conditions like tremors, uncontrollable shaking of the hands or other parts of the body, incontinence, inability to walk, which could also indicate a neurological condition. All these conditions, as long as they are being caused by problems with the nervous system, fall under the ambit of neurology.

Post Covid, Dr Prasun tells us, there has been an increase in the neurological conditions that doctors are observing in patients, and these conditions are more often than not a relic of the viral infection and the body’s resistance to it. These are commonly headaches, giddiness, post-Covid depression, lack of energy, brain fog, etc. Often, these conditions are detected by doctors of other specialities who then refer the patients to a neurologist.

Dr Prasun then goes on to tell us about the treatment options. Of course, the individual treatment path differs from patient to patient and should be handled by licensed practitioners, but overall, there are a number of advancements in medicine, such as Botox injections, that have shown excellent results for patients with neurological conditions. Especially in the case of strokes, it is seen that quick and timely intervention from competent neurologists greatly enhance the prognosis in the long term.

Neurological conditions, which do not always present as serious symptoms, should nevertheless not be ignored. If you think you or someone you know may be experiencing any symptoms that fall under this category, be sure to consult a neurologist at the earliest as timely detection is the best way to handle these conditions. And when it comes to finding competent neurologists, you can trust AMRI hospitals for the best care and consultation.
