At least six people were killed when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the lower Himalayan region early Wednesday, leading to tremors rippling across north India and parts of Nepal and jolting people out of their sleep in scores of cities and villages.

Mild aftershocks were also felt in the Uttarakhand-Nepal region at 3:15 am and 6:27 am. The NCS said the magnitude of the two tremors was 3.6 and 4.3 respectively. The National Earthquake Monitoring Centre of Nepal said a 6.6-magnitude quake was recorded at 2.12 am. The epicentre was Doti district.

The tremors were felt in Delhi and the surrounding areas of Ghaziabad and Gurugram and even in Lucknow, jolting people out of their sleep.

Meta Platforms Inc said on Wednesday it will let go of 13% of its workforce, or more than 11,000 employees, in one of the biggest tech layoffs this year as the Facebook parent battles soaring costs and a weak advertising market. 

The broad job cuts, the first in Meta's 18-year history, follow thousands of layoffs at other major tech companies including Elon Musk-owned Twitter and Microsoft Corp.

The pandemic boom that boosted tech companies and their valuations has turned into a bust this year in the face of decades-high inflation and rapidly rising interest rates.

Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday.  

President Droupadi Murmu administered him the oath at a brief ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He will serve as the head of the Supreme Court for two years till November 10, 2024. Justice Chandrachud takes over as the head of India's Judiciary from Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, who demitted office on Tuesday.

The High Court in London on Wednesday ordered diamond merchant Nirav Modi's extradition to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering, amounting to an estimated USD 2 billion in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan scam case.

The 51-year-old businessman, who remains behind bars at Wandsworth prison in south-east London, had been granted permission to appeal against District Judge Sam Goozee's Westminster Magistrates' Court ruling in favour of extradition last February.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Postgraduate (NEET-PG) scheduled for April-May next year could be the last such examination as the admission to PG medical courses thereafter will be based on the results of the National Exit Test to be taken by final-year MBBS students, officials have said.

At a high-level held on Monday, the National Medical Commission (NMC) is learnt to have conveyed to the Union Health Ministry that it intends to conduct the National Exit Test (NExT) in December 2023, official sources said on Wednesday.

Today marks Uttarakhand's 22nd Foundation Day. The hill state was carved out of Uttar Pradesh and formed on this day in 2000. 

A police parade was organised to celebrate the statehood day at Reserve Police Line in Dehradun. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also greeted the people of Uttarakhand on its statehood day.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that the BJP was "using" Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) with an eye on the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections. 

"Will the BJP decide who is a citizen and who is not? Matuas are very much citizens of this country," Banerjee said while addressing party workers in Krishnanagar.

A rejuvenated Pakistan lifted their game when it mattered the most and stormed into the T20 World Cup final with a convincing seven-wicket win over New Zealand here on Wednesday.

This will be Pakistan's third appearance in the T20 World Cup final. They had finished runners-up to India in the inaugural edition in 2007 before claiming the title two years later.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday inaugurate the Terminal 2 of the Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore that has been built at a cost of around Rs 5,000 crore, according to officials.

The airport will be able to handle around five-six crore passengers annually from its current capacity of 2.5 crore. Terminal 2 is designed as a tribute to the garden city of Bangalore and the passenger experience is meant to be a "walk in the garden", the officials said.

President Droupadi Murmu, who is scheduled to be in her home state Odisha for two days from November 10, will offer prayers at Lord Jagannath temple in Puri, besides visiting her alma mater in Bhubaneswar, officials here said.

Preparations ahead of Murmu's visit, at Grand Road in Puri. Murmu, on her maiden visit to the state since being sworn in to the high office in July, will also launch a education portal 'e-kumbh' (Knowledge unleashed in multiple Bharatiya languages) here and another Odia text book fOR engineering students.
