It was darkness at noon for Calcutta on Friday as heavy rains and thunderstorms hit the city. During peak hours, people faced traffic jams in various parts of the city that caused major delays.

The Met office on Friday said a low pressure area over north Bengal, coupled with an active monsoon, would bring heavy rainfall across most of West Bengal till August 26. South Bengal districts were expected to experience the most intense rainfall during this period, Met officials said.

The weather forecast predicts heavy rainfall on Friday night as well.
