Designer Rohit Bal’s opulent dine den Veda at 57A Park Street will be pulling down its shutters on August 31. When it opened exactly three years ago in 2012, the restaurant had caused quite a flutter with Gudda himself coming down for the grand launch. It stands right where Calcutta’s ol’ favourite Sky Room used to be.
It took quite a while for Veda’s bar licence to arrive but once it did, Veda Lounge, on the floor below the restaurant, picked up during its noon-8pm “happy hours” for GenY. On Tuesday, as word of several “farewell” parties went around including one that said the ‘Last Dance at Veda’, t2 confirmed the news with the Veda authorities. “Yes, Veda is wrapping up,” was the final word. Though there was no official word on why, the high rentals on Calcutta’s food street, running into seven figures per month, are becoming unaffordable for many chains. US fast food chain Pizza Hut, in the same Park Mansions property, shut shop in July.
If you’re a Veda patron, say goodbye to your party hangout at farewell parties on August 27 and 28.
