Actress Sonali Bendre announced on Twitter she is being treated for “metastised high grade cancer” for which she is undergoing treatment in New York.
“Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade-cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them,” read Sonali’s statement on Twitter.
Metastasis is a condition in which the cancer cells migrate from their primary site to other tissues in the body such as the liver, brain, or bones.
Sonali’s announcement comes within a month of actor Irrfan Khan revealing that he was suffering from cancer.
“There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. What has helped has been the immense outpouring of love and support I’ve received over the past few days, for which I am very grateful… I’m taking this battle head on, knowing I have the strength of my family and friends behind me,” she said.
The 43-year old Sonali made her debut with the Govinda starrer Aag in 1994 but her first brush with fame came a year later when she danced to Humma Humma from Mani Ratnam’s Bombay before landing up roles opposite Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and others. Arguably, her biggest hit was Sarfarosh (1999) opposite Aamir, in which her penchant to add “Don’t mind” before her dialogues endeared her character to the masses.
“Godspeed, love and strength to a true fighter and a solid soul,” tweeted filmmaker Karan Johar, in whose film Kal Ho Na Ho she played a doctor and childhood friend to the terminally ill character essayed by Shah Rukh Khan.
“Full power bhabs,” tweeted Abhishek Bachchan, friend of Sonali’s husband, filmmaker Goldie Behl.
“Deeply saddened & shaken by this news. Praying for your speedy recovery & good health,” tweeted actor Riteish Deshmukh.
