It’s never too late to say ‘Cheers!’

A year after its opening, the tipple licence has arrived at Barcelos in Acropolis Mall. Apart from the usual whisky, beer, vodka, rum and liqueur, this South African restaurant chain serving Portuguese and Middle Eastern cuisine is famous for its sangria. And not just one or two varieties, but 21 of them!

Look for sangria from Portugal, New Zealand, Jamaica and Spain. “Sangria is a lovely daytime drink that doesn’t leave you too intoxicated,” said Indranil Roy Chowdhury, director, Trivia Food and Beverages, the franchisee of Barcelos in Calcutta. The other thing to watch out for on the menu? The Portuguese cocktails and some new grub to go with it.

Stuffed Potato: Halved potatoes with skin are scooped out and stuffed with a mix of mushroom, corn and spinach in a creamy sauce, topped with mozzarella and then baked. Served with tomato salsa and sour cream.
Arancini: Fried risotto balls flavoured with garlic and cheese, coated with panko and deep-fried, are perfect snacks to go with a glass (or pitcher) of sangria. Served with sour cream.
The sangria comes in 21 different flavours, from four countries around the world. The Orange and Cloves Sangria has a mix of dark rum and red wine with a soothing clove flavour, the Cinnamon Apple Sangria is made with white wine and is a nice light drink, the Mint and Citrus Sangria from Spain is a refreshing drink for noon, the White Sangria with Kiwi and Grapes is for people who are looking for something different.
Chicken Olivet: Strips of chicken with tomato sauce and orange crush make this dish tangy-sweet. The olive and feta filling adds an interesting texture.
Portuguese Chicken Soup: This light, lemon-flavoured soup is great for summer. Bits of diced chicken and penne pasta make it a light meal for one.
Grilled Salmon: Flaky grilled salmon with two kinds of sauce — creamy mustard and lemon butter — on a bed of mashed potatoes is for all fish lovers who like simple flavours.
