The trailer of director duo Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s new film Raktabeej, starring Victor Banerjee, Abir Chatterjee and Mimi Chakraborty, promises a cat-and-mouse chase between cops and criminals based on the 2014 Burdwan blast.

The two-minute-29-second trailer opens with Birendra Krishna Bhadra’s iconic radio programme Mahishashura Mardini, setting the tone for Durga Puja. We catch a glimpse of Pankaj Sinha (Abir Chatterjee) jogging at Raisina Hill as Shiboprosad’s voiceover ominously informs viewers that the fire that demands sacrifice can also cause explosions.

The scene swiftly shifts to Bengal as we see Pankaj trailing criminals through a busy market. He is part of a central team investigating a blast in Khoyragarh, Burdwan, that rocked the nation. He is being assisted by Sanjukta Mitra (Mimi Chakraborty), SP, Burdwan.

In a flashback, we see Sanjukta in charge of supervising the security arrangements as the country’s president Animesh Dutta (Victor Banerjee) is slated to visit his ancestral village for Durga Puja. This is his first visit to Bengal since assuming office. Animesh’s reunion with his elder sister (Anashua Majumdar) shows the humane side of this political figure.

However, a conspiracy is afoot to harm Animesh during his visit. A group of extremists are baying for his blood to avenge the death of their leader. An accidental blast at a firecracker manufacturing unit, not very far from the president’s residence, sets the stage for a thrilling and suspenseful narrative. What ensues is a race against time as Pankaj and Sajukta try to nab the criminals before they carry out their plan.

Produced by Windows Production, Raktabeej will hit cinemas on October 19 in Bengali, Odia, Assamese and Hindi.
