When you spot a supermodel and a make-up pro at one table, you just have to plonk yourself beside them and listen on. You never know what you might end up learning! t2 did just that on spotting Indrani Dasgupta and Clint Fernandes on the sidelines of Max Sananda Tilottama 2016 at The Lalit Great Eastern on Saturday. And here’s what we noted...
Well-groomed eyebrows
Indrani: Part of your grooming is well-brushed and filled-out eyebrows. It goes a long way in framing your face and balancing it out. Even if you are not putting on make-up, nicely done and groomed eyebrows are a must in my book.
Clint: That’s true, actually. Even if you don’t have anything on your face, if you just have eyebrows that have been properly defined and finished, it automatically frames your face and makes it look complete. All you probably need is mascara and just to matte your face out so that it looks finished.
Indrani: I did have well grown-out eyebrows.... Just brush and make tweezers your good friend and learn to shape your own eyebrows, so you are not dependent on going to a salon every couple of weeks. I tweeze out mine every now and then when I need to. Don’t use black on the Indian skintone as a filler. Use a darker brown or a shade lighter than your own eyebrow colour.
Clint: I would say a brown-grey works really well, rather than a brown-brown because browns tend to have a lot of red tones in them. If you use a dark brown, it looks like it has coppery hints, reddish tones.
Indrani: Our mothers in their generation used an eyebrow pencil. You can use a powder palette and a brush instead.
Clint: A pencil is also fine. My mom still uses one.
Indrani: But brush it out then. That looks more natural. Otherwise it would look like it has been painted.
Clint: An eyebrow pencil would be much drier than a kohl pencil. It is almost like a writing pencil. So, it’s almost as if you are drawing out the hair. A lot of women make the mistake of using a kohl pencil instead of an eyebrow pencil. Either you use an eyebrow pencil or grey eyeshadow. If you want it more firmly fixed, use a layer of transparent mascara to set it in place.
Eye on trend
Indrani: I have always been a fan of a liner, a nice solid statement liner and if not a liner, then a dark, prominent mouth. Besides that, not really much.
Clint: Gold is a very big trend on the runway. So, hints of gold will definitely appear in make-up, and colours which will complement gold like peach, coral, cappuccino, caramel, red… so red lips will not go out of style. It’s here to stay for a bit.
Indrani: We are also moving towards winter and festive season… so, a lot more jewel tones.
Clint: The tones in her print (on Indrani’s Anamika Khanna top)… these are going to be the colours on the eyes. You can do smokey eyes with probably just this green or blue. Or you can do kajal effectively. Apply a thick layer of kajal and smudge it. It will give you a very soft, smokey feel. That looks very beautiful.
Shimmery lips
Clint: It’s a lipcolour layered with glitter, a rage on the ramp, but in reality I don’t know how much of a rage it will be! You cannot eat or drink the whole night if you have those lips.
Foundation stone
Indrani: Everyone should be using some sort of a foundation. Use a long-lasting one. To get it right, try it in natural light and on your face.
Clint: The ideal thing to do is make a bindi out of the foundation. If the bindi is transparent, you’ve got your foundation!
Indrani: It would be a blend of one or two colours.
Clint: Very true. For someone who is very fair, take one shade warmer and slightly deeper. For dusky girls, go into slightly more yellow-y or gold-ish tones. Gold complements dusky tones beautifully. Even if you are using a bronzer, mix it with the foundation and see your skin glow.
Go matte
Clint: Avoid the completely shiny look. Keep your look matte. That will also last longer through the day. Long-wear make-up is a must. If you have to go for a function which is four hours long, you are not going to go to the bathroom every five minutes to touch up your make-up. If you are trying out a new look, try a couple of times at home and see your family’s reaction. If they are shocked and aghast, then don’t do it.
On the international ramp
Clint: The dreadlock look that I saw recently at a New York show… I think it was a Tommy Hilfiger… rainbow-coloured dreadlocks… that was really cool.
