The trailer of filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s highly anticipated historical drama Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (PS-1) has come out, giving us a glimpse of the movie’s grand visuals and awe-inspiring production that are on a par with large-scale Hollywood films.

The movie, dubbed as Mani Ratnam’s most ambitious project, combines the might of Tamil, Telugu Hindi industries and Bollywood in its cast with actors such as Vikram as Aditya Karikalan, Karthi as Vanthiyathevan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini, Trisha as Kundhavai and Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhi Varman.

The grand visuals seen in the trailer promise a monumental retelling of the events that led to the Chola dynasty becoming one of the most powerful empires in the south of India during the 10th century.

The trailer chronicles the story of Arulmozhi Varman’s ascent to the throne of the Chola kingdom against a coup. Set in the 10th century, the story is narrated from the perspective of Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, who travels through the southern kingdoms to pass on messages between the Chola representatives. Vallavaraiyan is also a close confidant of Aditya Karikalan, elder son of then reigning monarch Sundara Chola and later a Chola emperor himself. The trailer also hints at a blossoming romance between Aditya and Nandini.

The all-star cast looks regal and exquisite in each frame, promising a rich visual experience. Additionally, this film features several intricate battles set in diverse settings, including one of the best war scenes ever depicted in Indian cinema. The power struggle and the politics inherent in the Chola dynasty are set to provide tough competition to the Targaryen civil war in House of the Dragon.
