Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer One Battle After Another, a satire about American radical politics, was named best picture at the 31st annual Critics Choice Awards on Monday (IST). The film also won best director and best adapted screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson.
Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of the classic horror tale, and Sinners, a vampire drama starring Michael B. Jordan, led the film awards with four wins each.
Frankenstein earned honours for supporting actor, with Jacobi Elordi winning for his performance as the Creature. The film also won awards for production design, hair and makeup, and costumes.
Sinners won awards for its original screenplay, casting, and score. The film’s 20-year-old star Miles Caton won best young actor.
On the television side, Adolescence, a murder investigation drama filmed in a single continuous shot, collected four awards, including best limited series. The show swept the limited series acting categories, with wins for Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, and Erin Doherty. Sarah Snook won best actress in a limited series for her performance in All Her Fault.
The Pitt was named best drama series and also earned acting awards for Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa. The Studio won best comedy series, with creator Seth Rogen taking best actor in a comedy and co-star Ike Barinholtz winning best supporting actor in the category.
The Studio is a satirical look at Hollywood executives racing to produce the next blockbuster, while The Pitt follows emergency department staff through a grueling hospital shift.
Jean Smart won best actress in a comedy for Hacks, and Janelle James was named best supporting actress in a comedy for Abbott Elementary.
In the drama categories, Rhea Seehorn won best actress for Pluribus, and Tramell Tillman earned best supporting actor for Severance.
In film acting categories, Jessie Buckley won best actress for her portrayal of a grieving mother in Hamnet. Timothée Chalamet received best actor for his role as a hustling ping-pong player in Marty Supreme. Amy Madigan won best supporting actress for her performance as a witch in the horror hit Weapons.
Netflix’s animated feature KPop Demon Hunters was named best animated film and also won best song for its hit track Golden. The Secret Agent, set during Brazil’s military junta, won best foreign language film.
Jimmy Kimmel won best talk show, following a year in which his program was briefly taken off the air over remarks he made about the murder of Charlie Kirk. In his acceptance speech, Kimmel emphasised the importance of free speech.
“And most of all, I want to thank our president, Donald Jennifer Trump, without whom, we would be going home empty-handed tonight,” Kimmel said. “So thank you, Mr. President, for all the many ridiculous things you do each and every day. It’s been a banner couple of weeks, and we can’t get wait to get back on the air tomorrow night to talk about them.”
The ceremony was hosted by Chelsea Handler, who opened the show by paying tribute to filmmaker Rob Reiner, who was murdered last month, calling him “the nicest guy in Hollywood”.
