Rituparna Sengupta on playing a superstar in Parambrata’s Jiyo Kaka!!...
What’s your character like in Jiyo Kaka!!?
I play an actress, who’s a superstar with a kid. She bonds with three boys (Rudranil, Rahul and Aviraaj) and becomes their friend. There are lots of twists and turns. It’s a fun film, a comedy.
You play a busy superstar. So did you identify with the role?
Yes, there are quite a few similarities. My character Nilanjana is a lot like me. She is generous and a little crazy. She’s also very busy, and so am I. Sometimes, her hard work doesn’t get appreciated, which happens to me all the time! (Winks). Like Nilanjana, I hardly have any time for myself. But she’s also different from me in many ways. At one point, she has to take a very bold step and her courage shines through. The film is packaged with surprises.... In a way, the role was challenging as I’ve never played an actress before. I had a lot of fun as I was working with Rudra, Rahul and Aviraaj for the first time.
How did you find Parambrata as a director?
He is very disciplined and calm, and knows his craft well. Earlier I saw him only as a good actor, but while doing Jiyo Kaka!! I realised that he was also a very good director. On the sets, I used to surrender myself completely to his vision. Param and I had worked in Anjan Das’s Swarger Niche Manush. On the sets, he would often come up to me and say, ‘Ritudi, there’s something I have to tell you’. But he took a long time to finally speak up and tell me that he wanted me in his film!
After a long time, you have two films, Jiyo Kaka!! and Necklace, releasing within the gap of a week…
Yes, almost 10 years back Sasurbari Zindabad and Bostir Meye Radha had released on the same day and both did very well. And as we know, history repeats itself. I hope both films are accepted by the audience.
