‘Nothing feels as lonely as success’

Karan Johar: Bhatt saab, when I look at your life, I feel like, you know, two wives, so many children, a career that you just stopped all of a sudden… but when you look back at this entire life, what is the first burst of thought that actually comes into your head?

Mahesh Bhatt: ‘How did I make it?’ I mean, when I look back I wonder how did I navigate through this bizarre space… early 20s, dropping acid, going to the spiritual supermarkets, looking for enlightenment, an extra-marital affair with an actress of the bygone days, Time magazine girl [Parveen Babi]. Seeing her collapse right in front of your eyes… becoming a wreck and then you’re being dismissed as a stillborn director. And somehow miraculously making your mark with an autobiographical film, Arth, kind of giving me a lease of life. And then achieving dizzying success in the first three-four years of my thirties, and then the loneliness of success. Nothing feels as lonely as success.

‘I’m not dropping towels or showing butt cracks’

Emraan Hashmi: In my first erotic film Murder, I made the mistake of sitting next to her (wife Parveen). The preview theatre was filled with my close friends and family. They knew what the film had, but they didn’t know how we were pushing the envelope. The first scene my wife [was] digging her nails into my hand like: ‘What the hell have you done? What are you doing because this is not Bollywood!’ When her hands came off in the climax, there were four jabs… I was injured, I was bleeding.

Karan: Has she just accepted the situation?

Emraan: She’s not accepted it… we’ve hit a common ground. Right now, there’s a deal that we have… the deal is I take her shopping. And she probably swipes the card close to seven-digit numbers!

Karan: But it’s also beyond kissing because you have done some very intense love-making scenes. You’ve done it all, haven’t you Emraan?

Emraan: I’m not showing anything more on screen right? No dropping towels, no showing butt cracks.

‘Emraan didn’t have the means to buy a cycle’

Karan: So you’ve been blamed Bhatt saab, for dropping his clothes, making him this brand of sex appeal, raw, raunchy, serial-kisser.... Do you take this blame entirely?

Mahesh: Well, that penthouse that he has in the Beverly Hills of India called Pali Hill, which costs (Rs) 40 crore is thanks to that image that was given to him. Because left to himself, he didn’t have the means to buy a cycle!
