Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming set out on a feel-good journey of rehoming imaginary creatures in the trailer of John Krasinski’s fantasy comedy IF.

Dropped on Thursday by the maker, the two-minute-22-second-long trailer presents Reynolds and Fleming as the only two people who can see all imaginary friends that every child ever thought up. Similar to the plot of the Cartoon Network show Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends (2004-2009), where imaginary friends outgrown by children lived in a foster home, the film shows a house where these abandoned imaginary creatures or IF live.

Steve Carell voices the IF named Blue, who urges Reynolds and Fleming to help the IFs get adopted by new children. The trailer shows a number of quirky CGI-spun imaginary creatures ranging from a frizzy, well-dressed teddy bear to a melting marshmallow on fire. The Quiet Place director shifts gears from the eerie to the lighthearted with child-friendly jokes and vibrant imagery of the worlds inhabited by the imaginary friends.

The Paramount Pictures film has a star-studded voice cast. Along with the director himself, the cast includes Fiona Shaw, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Maya Rudolph, Jon Stewart, Bobby Moynihan, Sam Rockwell, Sebastian Maniscalco, Christopher Meloni, Richard Jenkins and Awkwafina.

Along with the trailer, Paramount Pictures also released a two-minute-30-second behind-the-scenes video from the sets of IF. Krasinski, who recently played Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), revealed in the video that he had stumbled upon the idea for IF seven years ago.

IF is slated to arrive in theatres on May 17, 2024.
