Face-off

Before you choose your side this Friday, t2 gives you the low-down on who’s fighting whom in Captain America: Civil War

New York, Washington DC, Sokovia — every place the Avengers have battled the forces of evil are coming back to haunt them for the collateral damage that they’ve caused, and the government has decided to pass the Sokovia Accords, which will establish an international governing body to monitor and regulate all superhumans, including the Avengers. The Accords divides the Avengers with Tony Stark supporting it because the superheroes “need to be put in check”, while Captain America opposes it because “the safest hands” are still theirs.

TEAM IRON MAN VS TEAM CAPTAIN AMERICA

TEAM IRON MAN

Iron Man
Aka: Tony Stark
Played by: Robert Downey Jr
Last seen in: Avengers: Age of Ultron
The genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist with a bevy of electromechanical suits of armour has gone from being an egotistical inventor and entrepreneur to someone who is okay being monitored by an authority. His stance — he is for signing the Sokovia Accords — possibly stems from the events in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where in his arrogance he created a being that causes immense destruction. He has on his side War Machine, Black Widow, Vision, Black Panther and, from what we’ve seen in the trailer, Spider-Man.

Spider-Man
Aka: Peter Parker
Played by: Tom Holland
Last seen in: Never in the Marvel universe
His appearance at the end of the final trailer for Civil War left everyone super-excited because our favourite wall crawler was back in action and in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spidey is divided over the two factions in the Avengers and sides with Stark because of a personal connection, but we still hope that the movie will follow the comic book storyline.

War Machine
Aka: James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes
Played by: Don Cheadle
Last seen in: Avengers: Age of Ultron
US Air Force officer and Tony Stark’s friend as well as a wingman of sorts, Rhodey operates the War Machine armour, which is very similar to the Iron Man suit. We see Rhodey take a hit in the trailers but whether he is a casualty of the civil war, we’ll find out next week.

Vision
Aka: Not applicable
Played by: Paul Bettany
Last seen in: Avengers: Age of Ultron
Created from the artificial intelligence called J.A.R.V.I.S using a Mind Stone, Vision is siding with Tony Stark on this one. Though he sided with the A-Team against Ultron, no one is too sure about where his loyalties lie or what he is exactly capable of.

Black Panther
Aka: T’Challa
Played by: Chadwick Boseman
Last seen in: Not applicable
The Black Panther is a ceremonial title given to the chief of the Panther Tribe in the African nation of Wakanda. T’Challa is starting to prepare for his role as the Black Panther and his beef with Cap and his team is not about the Sokovia Accords but something more personal (we don’t know what yet).

Black widow
Aka: Natasha Romanoff
Played by: Scarlett Johansson
Last seen in: Avengers: Age of Ultron
The super-spy is torn between the two. Her mind is with Tony Stark but her heart is with Captain America. And she is struggling to get over her past. Her closeness to Cap, that we see in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will be severely tested this time.

TEAM CAPTAIN AMERICA

Captain America
Aka: Steve Rogers
Played by: Chris Evans
Last seen in: Ant-Man
For the first time we are going to see Cap, who has always been a soldier, stand against regimentation and regulation, opposing the Sokovia Accords. The company man is on his way to becoming an insurgent and while he is too good — and his goodness is as much a part of his powers as his super-strength — to become an anti-hero, we’ll definitely see the Cap walking the other side of the law. His old friend Bucky Barnes is also going to be a bone of contention. His teamies are Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Falcon and Scarlet Witch.

Ant-man
Aka: Scott Lang
Played by: Paul Rudd
Last seen in: Ant-Man
The petty criminal with the hi-tech suit that shrinks him to ant size and gives him super-strength is joining Team Cap in the civil war that’s brewing between the Avengers.

Falcon
Aka: Sam Wilson
Played by: Anthony Mackie
Last seen in: Ant-Man
The pararescueman trained in aerial combat has been Cap’s wingman since Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and their relationship is one of mutual respect. Though he helps Cap locate Bucky Barnes, his equation with Cap might alter because of Barnes’s presence.

WINTER SOLDIER
Aka: Bucky Barnes
Played by: Sebastian Stan
Last seen in: Ant-Man
Cap’s best friend from before World War II may have been an antagonist in Captain America: The Winter Soldier but we saw that Cap had tracked him down in the post-credit scene of Ant-Man. When Barnes was brainwashed and armed with a new cybernetic limb, he became an enhanced HYDRA operative. He is one of the reasons Cap and Stark clash.

Hawkeye
Aka: Clint Barton
Played by: Jeremy Renner
Last seen in: Avengers: Age of Ultron
The ace archer is back in the mix with Captain America: Civil War which pitches him against friend and partner Natasha. He joins Steve Rogers’s side because the ‘Cap called first’. All he wants is to get this over with and get back to the family.

Scarlet Witch
Aka: Wanda Maximoff
Played by: Elizabeth Olsen
Last seen in: Avengers: Age of Ultron
Wanda, who has the power to harness magic as well as hypnosis and telekinesis, lost her brother in the fight against Ultron. She is internally conflicted as she comes to terms with her powers and has to battle that as well as the one within the Avengers.
