Dangerous Grande

Ariana Grande explodes today with Dangerous Woman

TT Bureau Published 20.05.16, 12:00 AM

She’s not afraid
The idea behind Ariana Grande’s May 20 release is a simple one. “I feel like my personal growth is reflected in the sound. I’m really proud of it.... To me a dangerous woman is someone who’s not afraid to take a stand, be herself and to be honest,” Ari said during a live Twitter chat in February.

Love thy body
After the release of the title track on March 11, a Facebook commenter criticised the 22-year-old for sporting lacy black lingerie in the video: “Ariana all respect, but dangerous woman I loved but the trouble is that in (t)he video salts like a wh**e! Sorry for the rudeness, I only just said the truth.... SORRY.” But Ariana was far from sorry in her reply to the post: “When will people stop being offended by women showing skin/ expressing sexuality? Men take their shirts off/express their sexuality on stage, in videos, on Instagram, anywhere they want to... All. The. Time. The double standard is so boring and exhausting. With all due respect, I think it’s time you get your head out of your ass. Woman can love their bodies too!!”

First Wives Club
The transition of the former Nickelodeon’s star to pint-sized powerhouse (all of 5ft tall) can be felt on the track Bad Decisions, which will be included in the deluxe edition. She sings: “Ain’t you ever seen a princess be a bad b**ch?” And she was unapologetic about it in a recent interview with Grazia: “I feel like people are always constantly trying to pin me down as a good girl or a bad girl but I think women can be whatever, and me too.” And this dangerous woman looks up to a few “fierce” women, who star in her favourite film, The First Wives Club. “I love every woman in that movie. SJP, Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, they’re all so fierce,” she added.

Oh man those ad-libs and
little extra vocals in the
last choruses of Into You
really light my fire. Also the
first sentence, that “I’m so
into you / I can barely breathe”
is like maybe the closest thing
to pop perfection I’ve ever
heard. Lorde @lorde

Dangerous moment
The lyrics of Ari’s May 5 release, the club banger Into You, lives up to the album’s title: “A little less conversation, a little more touch my body/ Cause I’m so into you, into you, into you.”

Teamwork
The collaborators on the album include music industry’s go-to producer Max Martin on Focus (which was supposed to be lead track but was later relegated to the Japanese edition) and on the title track. Lil Wayne is the man on Let Me Love You; Nicki Minaj on Side to Side; Macy Gray on Leave Me Lonely; and rapper Future on Everyday.

Track record
Her 2014 album My Everything earned her Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy nomination last year but more importantly, it made her a big name on the touring circuit. Big enough to find a place in Time magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People’ this year.

Taking on the gals
The 5ft singer has made the US five-piece band Fifth Harmony defer their album release by a week… that’s not official but a rumour and a plausible one. In a video the band said their album 7/27 will now release on May 27 “to keep cohesive with the theme of 27”. Why not July 27, we wonder! That’s the date the girls were put together as a five-piece group on the second season of X Factor USA in 2012.

Insta drive beats B & K
Expect her social media following to go berserk on May 20. With 72.2 million followers on Instagram, the pint-sized showbiz powerista has nudged past Beyonce (71 million followers) and Kim Kardashian (70.4 million followers). Ahead of her are Taylor Swift (77.6 million) and Selena Gomez (79.5 million). Add to this her 38.6 million followers on Twitter.
