What: Duniya Rang Rangeeli, a Hindi play presented by Hindusthan Club in association with t2
Where: Hindusthan Club
When: August 31
On stage: This joint production by Spandan and The Ultimate Theatre — Duniya Rang Rangeeli — brought to life characters from six short stories by Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov, as well as the character of the writer himself. The two-hour production took the audience through a roller-coaster ride of emotions from romance to humour or satire, with Chekhov’s character making frequent appearances on stage, sometimes introducing characters, sometimes just as a silent observer of their drama. The performances were based on stories like The Death of a Government Clerk, The Seduction and Surgery, but the loudest cheer came for the comic adaptation of A Defenceless Creature, where a woman with a nervous disorder harasses a banker and extorts money for her injured husband. “Life has many colours and each adaptation of Chekhov’s stories showed a new colour. His work is very relevant in today’s time,” said Ashok Singh, director of the play.
Club speak: “There was a good mix of emotions in the different stories in the play, which the members liked a lot,” said Shiv Kumar Lohia, honorary secretary of Hindusthan Club.
