THE ADULT ENTERTAINER 

With 1.44 million followers on Twitter, Sunny Leone is one of the most Googled (former) adult film stars. Sunny’s official Twitter bio reads — ‘Only GOD will Judge! life is short lets make the most of it!’, and she has tried her hand at a wide range of films in a career spanning 15 years.

Born to Sikh Punjabi parents in Sarnia, Ontario, Karenjit Kaur Vohra, far better known as Sunny Leone, was an athletic young girl, playing street hockey with the boys. Studying to be a paediatric nurse in Orange County, Sunny was introduced to an agent who in turn introduced her to Jay Allen, a photographer for Penthouse magazine. 

Named Penthouse Pet of the Year in 2003, Sunny, who joined the porn industry at age 18, made heads turn with her 34-24-34 dare-bare acts. She went on to star in more than 40 adult entertainment films such as Virtual Vivid Girl Sunny Leone, It’s Sunny in Brazil, Sunny Leone: Goddess, Sunny’s Casting Couch: I Wanna Be a Pornstar between 2002 and 2013. A self-confessed bisexual, she has also done lesbian sex scenes in films like Lesbian Workout. Sunny has a number of adult gadgets named after her, notably the Sunny Leone Exciter Vibrator. Sunny and her husband Daniel Weber own Sunlust Pictures, an adult entertainment company.    
 

THE BOLLY BABYDOLL

Not many went ‘Who’s that girl?’ when she walked into the Bigg Boss house one afternoon in November 2011. For the name Sunny Leone rung a bell even with those who weren’t familiar with her “body” of work. A few episodes in, Mahesh Bhatt walked in to offer her a film… and Sunny Leone had her ticket to Bollywood.

Jism 2, her Bolly debut that released in mid-2012 and was promoted as a mix of erotica and thrill, immediately laid bare a fact: Sunny couldn’t act. But the audiences who trooped in just didn’t care. They were there to see Sunny: Sunny in a bikini, Sunny draped in a bedsheet, Sunny mouthing come-hither lines, Sunny romping in bed…. Riding on the Sunny factor, Jism 2 notched up sizeable box office. And Bollywood had discovered a profit model that didn’t have ‘Khan’ written on it: Sunny Leone, the unlikely star was born. 

Four years on, Sunny hasn’t become a better actress and her films are unlikely to make it to the archives, but she continues to be the Babydoll (“I was very lucky that Ekta Kapoor gave me that song,” Sunny had told t2) of the nation.
Her Bolly formula is simple: sign films in which she will be the sole focus, pout and preen in a bikini, take on parts that don’t demand much out of an actress and push up the oomph factor several notches. But she rarely makes it overtly crass and crude (yes, Mastizaade was an exception). She’s also Bolly’s go-to girl when it comes to item numbers: Laila to Pink lips, Chaar botal vodka to Shake that booty.

THE UNLIKELY WRITER

Late last month, Sunny debuted yet again, this time as a writer, for the spanking new publishing house, Juggernaut Book. When a former porn star picks up the pen, you expect a, well, bare-all, but Sunny surprised everyone by writing fiction. Titled Sweet Dreams, it’s a collection of mostly erotic short stories. 

“I love reading stories.... I always had story ideas in my head and I wanted to put them down on paper. It was just a different way to express myself,” she told t2. 

While the stories may be over-simple lusty fantasies, we applaud her gumption in trying out new things and breaking stereotypes. Who said a sizzler can’t be a storyteller?!

distant 10th.
