Einstein once said, “If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.” Which seems to have inspired Delhi-based designers Kriti Tula and Divisha Kashyap, who recycle used clothes and turn them into funky, new outfits under their label Doodlage.

A three-day exhibition at Living Free, the eco-friendly store at 5 Leela Roy Sarani (near Ballygunge Kwality), recently showcased their range. The contemporary and quirky line of clothing for women included a bolero jacket made from used trousers, apart from tops, tunics, playsuits and skirts made with leftover scraps of fabric.

Fresh and wearable, the idea behind Doodlage is for “youngsters to accept the use of recycled products”. “We basically recycle and upcycle clothes from industry waste products that have been discarded or are out of fashion. We work on these clothes and change the style. We also alter the cut and give it an abstract look,” said Kriti, showing off a kimono jacket that had designer Nil ordering one for himself.

Asked how some pieces looked brand-new and far from ‘second-hand’, Kriti explained how markets like Sarojini Nagar in Delhi sold stuff that are “cool” but cheap. “People wear these pieces a few times and then discard them because even they’d rather not repeat clothes!” said Kriti.

Up next is a line for men and children. The range begins at Rs 2,500 and goes up to Rs 10,000.
