Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination was the theme for the Met Gala 2018 — dubbed one of the world’s most powerful fashion events — held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday. Which meant the red carpet was chock-a-block with Hollywood actresses and popstars in out-of-the-box designs.

Pregnant American rapper Cardi B attended her first Met Gala in a custom pearl-embellished ensemble by Moschino. The shade of ivory, elaborate headpiece, the choker and the gloves captured the “Catholic Imagination” theme quite well.

Dangerous Woman hitmaker Ariana Grande made her debut at the Met Gala this year in a stunning Vera Wang gown which had the Sistine Chapel’s imagery. What a fab way to do the theme!

One of the hosts for the Met Gala 2018, it was hard to match Rihanna’s effort and diva quotient on the red carpet. Dressed in a Maison Margiela by John Galliano outfit, RiRi — a showstopper at previous Met Gala editions — channelled papal vibes and boy, did she impress!

Fishnets and Madonna are inseparable, and this time she innovated with a fishnet veil. The black Jean Paul Gaultier number was jazzed up with a golden crown and her blonde hair done up in plaits.

Singer-actress Zendaya looked like she was ready to go on battle in the metallic armour outfit by Versace. Who did she dress up as? Saint Joan of Arc, of course!

Straight down from the heavens — Gigi Hadid looked angelic in her Versace outfit that had butterfly wings with a stained-glass art effect and a deep blue trail.

We would have passed Sex & The City actress Sarah Jessica Parker’s gold-embellished Dolce & Gabbana gown had it not been for the totally wacky headgear — a mini installation of the Nativity Scene!

Katy Perry is known for her over-the-top appearances at the Met Gala. The Swish Swish singer turned into an angel with giant white wings (almost 6ft) attached to a golden Versace mini dress. That’s some flight of fantasy!

Desi girls

Priyanka Chopra gave the Holly ladies a run for their money in a Ralph Lauren burgundy velvet gown with a golden embroidered hood, and an attitude to match. The glitter on her arms, wavy hair and dark plum mouth made the Quantico actress look regal. Did you know how long it took to get the embroidery of her hood done? Two hundred and fifty hours!

Deepika Padukone looked pretty in a Prabal Gurung red gown and red lips but it wasn’t edgy enough for a Met Gala outing.
