She has been painting for almost 50 years now and has had the opportunity to closely watch M.F. Husain at work, an experience she calls “a miracle”. Sunita Kumar recently showcased her latest works at Taj Bengal’s The Promenade Lounge with her friends and family gathered around her.

(Clockwise from left) grandson Karamvir, friend Sharmila Tagore, granddaughter Neeti, daughter Preah Narang, daughter-in-law Jessima, son Arjun, grandson Nihal, Sunita and her husband Naresh Kumar posed for the t2 camera.

Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi lit the lamp with Sunita Kumar, Naresh Kumar and Sharmila Tagore by his side. “The paintings are a colourful expression of thoughts. They describe the sentiments of the painter,” he said. “The guests are all very appreciative about my colours; they are saying it’s very peaceful and happy,” she told t2.

“I liked the room of the Mother (Teresa). I bought the one with the mustard fields… I told her it was very much like (Vincent) van Gogh. Very much like her own personality, her paintings are calm and happy. I have a couple of her paintings at home… Mother Teresa with a little baby… then one with a couple of elephants. There is a celebration of everyday things… nature, clouds, trees and birds… it is a happy and joyous feeling,” said Sharmila.

Sunita Kumar later presented Keshari Nath Tripathi with a painting at Raj Bhavan

Her message for her friend of many years? “Carry on the way she has. She has been wonderful. I have known her for 50 years now. I come here very often, it’s like an oasis. She’s coped with everything extremely calmly and positively. I learn from that; I feel that’s the way to live. It’s very nice to visit them. Naresh of course speaks Bengali like a Bengali… very cultured, bhodro… as they say shareef log, who really welcome people,” she added.

Sanjiv Goenka with Naresh Kumar. “My favourite is Sunita, not the paintings!” said Naresh, his trademark wit evident. His observation of Sunita, the painter? “I think she is breaking out more now,” he said.
