Nusrat Jahan was waiting to be surprised when we caught up with her for this ‘bold and beautiful’ shoot at JW Marriott Kolkata right before her birthday. “I have said what flavour cake I want,” she smiled. Nusrat looked striking. “Turning 30 (on January 8) and not looking like one is absolutely fine,” smiled the Asur actress. “Fitter, mature, adventurous… I live my age,” added Nusrat as she settled down with a platter of grilled fish, for a chat post-shoot.
So you’re starting the year on a bold and beautiful note! Who have been your bold and beautiful icons? Sushmita Sen comes to our mind immediately…
Yes, when you say a bold Bengali, she comes to mind. When you say a bold babe, I will go for an Angelina Jolie. She is pretty bold the way she carries herself. These days Bollywood is also growing fond of boldness. Earlier, we had a mental block that we are exposing. No, we are not exposing. We are styling ourselves aesthetically. There is no harm in showing your curves. Even people who are on the plump side can also flaunt their curves. The Sabya model (Varshita Thatavarthi) looked so gorgeous. Bideshe ei chol ta eshe gechhey. It’s reached Bollywood too… Tollywood e aantey hobey.
What makes a person bold?
Bold is the way you think. You have to be comfortable in your own skin. To bring about a change is a bold thought for me. To break stereotypes is a bold thought for me.
Who is a beautiful person according to you?
Someone who can cause a mess or bring about a storm or act like a nightmare, looking like a daydream.
Who fits the bill?
Aami nijey! (Laughs out loud) Earlier if I had to describe myself in a nutshell, I would say ‘I am an amalgamation of simplicity and sophistication’. I just tweaked it a little. When I met Nikhil (Jain; husband), I said, ‘I am a nightmare dressed in a daydream. Cholbey?’ I think now he realises. Prothome bujhte pareni! But whatever you do in life, you should bring about a change for the betterment.
What is a bold fashion trend that you want to try?
Wearing a suit without a shirt and accessorising with a belt is something I would like to try. It doesn’t look vulgar. I am okay trying it, but people around me should be okay accepting it. There is an acceptance issue. If you tie a sari low waist, that too is a bold look. I am yet to try that. I think that will be my first attempt before the suit. Saris are very hot.
Any iconic sari looks?
Sridevi swaying in a blue chiffon in Mr. India.
What are the trends you find beautiful?
I think nudes. It looks fresh. I got a meme from my better half: ‘My better half takes 90 minutes to get the perfect no make-up look!’ We were going for a December 31 party and I said I would go for the no-make-up look. That took me 90 minutes! (Laughs) Aamar mood ta puro noshto hoye gelo… eta appreciation na opomaan! The most beautiful look for a Bengali girl would be putting nice kohl and smudge it. Keep your lips nude.
What else are you trying this year?
I would try to walk more in heels. I am a chappal person and sneakers when I am travelling. I prefer comfort over fashion. I also want to try tied-up hair looks. I prefer my hair flowy and carefree. I have to keep playing with my hair. I keep torturing my hairstylits, but I will try to listen to them. I have never tried bold colours on my eyes. I never had the guts to try it… today I did. Make-up in cinema is different and even if I am going to parties, I would go for the tried-and-tested looks. It’s time to try new things… I would try fuchsia or neon on my eyes may be… may be colour-blocking.
So, you are becoming more accommodating in life…
… flexible hoye gelam… I have been rigid for years now. I might appear flexible but I know I am doing things in my limits… ei jonyo hyan bollam… ebar ektu chhartey chai.
