The roads of Calcutta always bring out the worst in me. Leave alone seeing red, I probably see all the shades of the rainbow when I drive on the city’s roads. The three things that I have a special grouse against are the autos, the incorrigible taxi drivers and the reckless, careless pedestrians. All three have one thing in common — no one cares a hoot about either rules or safety. The autos try and cram in an impossible number of people into their matchbox-like interiors, and then speed on impossibly narrow roads. They don’t think twice about overtaking from the right and are a veritable menace. The icing on the cake comes in the form of pedestrians who couldn’t care less about signals, signs, instructions from traffic cops and their own safety. It’s a wonder that we survive as we do on these roads without more accidents happening each day.
