Lebanese flavours from an open kitchen

It was a busy afternoon on Shakespeare Sarani when I stepped in to Shawarma House, a small eatery serving Lebanese dishes since March. I have grown to love Mediterranean cuisine as a popular fast food option in the UK and hence eager to see what the new restaurant had to offer.

Hashweh Lamb: Served with rice, this light but filling one-pot meal comes with shredded lamb and a seasoning of mayonnaise. The rice is mildly spiced and a little chewy, with tender meat that has a hint of cinnamon. Rs 200-plus

It was a busy afternoon on Shakespeare Sarani when I stepped in to Shawarma House, a small eatery serving Lebanese dishes since March. I have grown to love Mediterranean cuisine as a popular fast food option in the UK and hence eager to see what the new restaurant had to offer.

I was impressed by the retro decor with a range of colourful and jazzy hanging lights, making me feel  welcomed and at ease. They had nothing to hide, including an open kitchen were I could see the food being made for the latest order. I watched how each meal was fresh, customised to individual needs.

Chicken Shawarma: Shawarma is a popular street food in Lebanon and across the Midddle East. It’s kind of a wrap usually made with pita bread and shredded chicken scraped off from a spinning meat grill. The spices used at this restaurant are imported from the Middle East to give the diner an “authentic” experience. Rs 200-plus

Md. Tarique, the co-director of Shawarma House, then explained why this Lebanese restaurant was “unlike anything Calcutta has experienced before”. “Everything we prepare is authentically Lebanese. The quality is different, for we pride ourselves on our fresh, healthy ingredients and a high level of hygiene,” said Tarique.

The food arrived soon — a variety of light bites followed by more filling options. Each dish was flavoursome with mixed spices, vegetables and a range of sauces.

Fattoush Lamb: This fresh salad served with croutons and shredded lamb is seasoned with a tangy sumac vinaigrette and is a perfect starter for Rs 230-plus. You can add a plate of shredded chicken (Rs 190-plus) to make it a meal.

The restaurant was abuzz with food delivery personnel, hinting at its popularity with the home-delivery consumers. The restaurant has its own delivery app as well, and one can also call the restaurant to place an order.
