At last, 2011. After the revelry of New Year’s Eve parties or late night television, something a little more serious. The United Nations has declared 2011 the International Year of Forests to raise awareness and strengthen forest management, conservation and development. Interestingly, the world’s rain forests make up just 2 per cent of the earth’s total surface area and yet over 50 per cent of the Earth’s plants and animals can be found here. Let’s make a New Year’s resolution to protect our forests in simple ways…every tree counts, including the one they chopped down in the neighbourhood as we looked the other way. Have a memorable 2011.
