Do you know who was the only President of the USA (POTUS) to resign from office? For seasoned quizzards, that would be a silly full toss pulled away for 10 easy points. Today is that man’s birthday; the former POTUS whose name history will always tag with that nine-letter bogey word: you got it, Watergate. Journalists worldwide use this suffix (gate) to denote any political or financial swindle. Each continent has had its share of ‘-gate’ scandals: in Germany, the ‘Waterkantgate’, in Greece the ‘Pasokgate’, in New Zealand the ‘Grannygate’, in France the ‘Henrygate’. Closer home the ‘IPLgate’ and other assorted ‘gates’. Whatever be the prefix, let’s banish the seedy suffix from our lives this year. Is anyone listening?
