The exact origin of April Fools’ Day is still debated. While some suggest that Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales first mentions this day, others connect it to the change over from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Over the years even the normally serious media has played some incredible hoaxes. Perhaps the most notable was in 1957, when the BBC carried a documentary showing Swiss farmers collecting a bumper spaghetti harvest from trees. Last year Virgin claimed that Branson had bought Pluto and was planning to get it reinstated as a planet. But by far my favourite is the 1962 hoax by a Swedish TV channel, which announced that viewers could convert their existing black and white sets to colour by pulling a nylon stocking over the screen. ROFL!
