In 75 years only four Indians have climbed America’s literary Everest — winning the Pulitzer Prize. The first of the four has an innocuous sounding name: Gobind Behari Lal. Then there were two ladies. Geeta Anand in 2003 and the glamorous Jhumpa Lahiri a few years before her. Lal cornered the glory for journalism, Lahiri for her best-selling debut novel, Anand for her writing on a muscular condition. Siddhartha Mukherjee, the handsome doctor with the demeanour of an investment banker, recently won his Pulitzer for The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer. Watch out for the new poster boy of Indo-American writing.
