I had my first mango of the season last week. Late, but it’s the old theory of delaying it a bit... to miss the sour one too early in the season...Not so surprising that I missed the early-season Bombais. The Alphonso may be considered by many to be the king among the thousand-plus varieties of this subcontinental fruit, but I am sure that many of you share my view that the exotically sweet Gulab Khas, the deliciously fleshy Langra and the heavenly Himsagar, are the preferred favourites of us Calcuttans. Then, of course, some swear by the Lakshman Bhog, while others wait impatiently for their Kishen Bhog. Enough banter, let me get back to my juicy Mangifera indica.
