September 14 is Hindi Diwas. It was on this day in 1949 that Hindi was recognised as the “official language of the Union”, according to Article 341 (1) of the Constitution. Talking about languages, the first language that I picked up was… no not English, but Bengali. The little Hindi that I learnt while growing up, was from what I would recall from watching Bollywood movies. I would sing Hindi songs word for word without knowing the meaning of what I was singing. We also learnt French (the other option was Sanskrit) as a third language in middle school. But the most fun I had was in learning a few naughty phrases in Telugu taught to me by the late Appan Rao, the family cook. I know precisely four sentences in Tamil, courtesy the quiz we did on television on a vernacular channel. However, if I have one regret, it is that I can only speak Hi-ngali — Hindi with a thick Bengali accent.
