Last week’s festivities reminded us again about the wondrous multi-cultural-lingual-religious country we are. We celebrated Id-ul-Fitr, Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi, all in the space of a few days. The birthday of Lord Ganesha is to Maharashtra what Durga Puja is to Calcutta. That Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Shukla Chaturthi of the month of Bhadrapada, lasts for 10 days and ends on Anant Chaturdashi are things we know. There is a mighty bit more to it. In 1893, freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak propagated the event not only as a community celebration, involving non-Brahmins, but also as a national festival. Truly Lord Ganesh is the ‘God of Everyman’. Ganpati Bappa Morya!
