WINNERS: A jubilant Team BRC (standing; from l-r) — Gaurav Baheti, Sunjay Somani, Anshuman Nopany, Kishore Somani, Santosh Kucheria, (sitting from l-r) Vedika Agarwal and Shradha Kucheria. “Playing seven-eight consecutive rounds of chess is extremely taxing, mentally. The entire team played with great vigour and CSC were great competitors. It’s great that clubs are now organising chess competitions, which is a sure-shot way to enhance the sport’s popularity,” said Anshuman Nopany, the chess captain of BRC.

RUNNERS-UP: Team CSC (l-r) Mrinal Shah, coach Anup Bhowmick, Arhan Boyd, Divyang Sawalka, Anshuman Dabriwala, Mihir Shah and Sumit Jalan clinched the runners-up trophy. “Topping the league stage was awesome. The finals were intense and we felt we were ahead at one point, but our opponents played better. Winning a trophy is always great but since we didn’t win, this is a bittersweet feeling,” said Anshuman Dabriwala, the chess captain of CSC.

The seven teams played a round-robin stage, from which CSC, The Bengal Rowing Club (BRC), The Saturday Club and Space Circle qualified for the next round.

CSC and BRC faced off against each other in the finals, with BRC emerging champions, winning three out of the four games.
