What comes to mind when one thinks of stuffing for parathas? Gobi, methi and the all-time favourite aloo, right? Would anyone be able to imagine the taste of a paratha stuffed with shitake mushrooms, quinoa or even Nutella? Well, chef Rahul Arora could, as he whipped up some yummy parathas at Paranthe Wali Galli as part of the restaurant’s first birthday celebrations.
How did Rahul derive inspiration for such unconventional flavours? City celebrities and even Team t2 picked out ingredients for him. His response? A “challenge accepted!” Barney Stinson style.
Team t2 stumped the chef with their ingredient: bubblegum. But chef Rahul hit it out of the park. The paratha tastes so much like bubblegum that it will make you want to blow a bubble! Stuffed with marshmallows and bubblegum syrup, covered with white chocolate and black currants, it surely is a chewy sweet delicacy.
t2 verdict: We’ll definitely be going back for more! “The toughest paratha of all was the bubblegum one. It was so hard to balance the taste; it took me one and a half months to get it right,” said Rahul.
The Chocolate Praline Paratha, given by Swastika Mukherjee, has chocolate, with the praline adding crunch. “I’m a huge dessert and chocolate person, so I had to give a dessert-related flavour. They serve the paratha hot, so the chocolate is gooey and melting! I’ve been a huge fan of Rahul’s parathas, especially the gulkand one,” said the actress, who also suggested Cheese Wai Wai as another flavour.
The Kosha Mangsho paratha, suggested by Parno Mittra, has a strong Bengali flavour to it with the stuffed boneless mangsho cooked in typical spices. “I didn’t expect it to turn out like this at all! It had all the flavours of Kosha Mangsho and the best part were the green chillies,” said the actress.
Actress Ritabhari Chakraborty’s choice was bound to be popular — stuffed with chicken sausages, the Sausage and Cheddar Cheese Paratha oozes cheese with every bite. “I have always loved the cheese parathas from Bon Appetit (also owned by Rahul), so when he came to me with the challenge, I thought sausages might make it better. And I was right! It is the best of both worlds,” she said.
