Hyderabad, July 27: Wipro today proposed to expand its operations in Visakhapatnam and set up a Santoor soap unit near Hindupur in Anantapur district.

Wipro chairman Azim Premji and his team had called on the chief minister of residual Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, to discuss the Visakhapatnam project, state IT minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy told newspersons today.

The Wipro chairman also called on Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao over expanding operations in his state.

Wipro was given 7.1 acres at Visakhapatnam in 2004 for a software centre. The company has developed 2 lakh sq feet covering 4 acres and given 650 jobs so far. “Now they want SEZ status for the rest of the 3.1 acres left unused so that they can set up a 5-lakh-square-foot development centre and provide 7,000 jobs in five years,” Reddy said.

According to Reddy, Wipro has agreed to expand in tier-II towns such as Vijayawada, Kakinada and Tirupati.
