Benchmark indices signed off Samvat 2074 on a volatile note on Tuesday with the Sensex gaining almost 41 points. During the year, the gauge has risen over 7 per cent.

In Tuesday’s session, the 30-share index began higher at 35076.24 and hit an intra-day high of 35196.03.

However, profit-booking in the last one hour of trading, reflecting the losses in European markets, erased most of the gains and the index hit a low of 34889.72, before settling at 34991.91 points, up 40.99 points or 0.12 per cent. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty, after shuttling between 10600.25 and 10491.45 points, ended the last session of Samvat 2074 with a rise of 6 points at 10530.

During Samvat 2074, the Sensex has gained 2407.56 points, or 7 per cent, while the Nifty rose 319.15 points, or over 3 per cent. During the year, Tech Mahindra topped the returns list by rising almost 52 per cent. It is followed by TCS, Infosys and Titan whose shares rose 50 per cent, 44 per cent and 39 per cent, respectively.

The bourses will conduct a special “Muhurat trading” session on Wednesday between 1700 and 1830 hours on the occasion of Diwali. The markets will remain closed on Thursday.

In Tuesday’s trading, while sentiments were influenced by positive cues from other Asian markets, caution came ahead of the US mid-term elections.

Market experts fear that Samvat 2075, too, will be volatile in the first half because of factors such as the current tiff between the government and the RBI, liquidity woes and upcoming elections in five states.
