New Delhi, April 1: Volkswagen's Indian arm today said it will recall 3,877 Vento sedan cars over inconsistent carbon monoxide emissions, besides halting the sales of the model with immediate effect even as it battles allegations that it cheated on vehicle emission norms in Europe and elsewhere.
The recall is restricted to the 1.5-litre diesel engine models with manual gearboxes and is not connected to the global nitrogen oxide emission issue, the company said.
The recall has been initiated because of inconsistent carbon monoxide emissions that were observed to be sometimes exceeding the threshold during the conformity of production tests done by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Volkswagen India is analysing the issue and will propose technical measures to the ARAI to solve this inconsistency at the earliest.
"Once approved and confirmed by the competent authorities, Volkswagen India will implement the measures and resume production and sales of the relevant vehicle. The same technical measures will also be implemented in the impacted vehicles that are already with customers," it said.
It claims all vehicles in the customers' hands are technically safe and roadworthy. All other diesel models and variants of Volkswagen India, including Vento 1.5TDI with automatic transmission (direct-shift gearbox), and all diesel Polo cars conform to the norms and will continue to be produced and sold in India.
