Hyderabad, April 11 :
The Tata Teleservices (Tata Tel), which launched its basic telephony services in Hyderabad on March 31, is aiming at 50,000 connections by the end of March 2000.
Prabhat. K. Pani, vice-president (marketing) of Tata Teleservices, said 400 customers were on the board when the Alpha phase ended last week. The basic telephony service launched in the Andhra capital will cover 70 kms for wireless and 144 kms for wireline connections over three years. The company plans to extend the basic telephony services to Vijayawada and Vishakapatnam in a phased manner.
While DoT and Trai have set deposits for both wireless and wireline services at Rs 3,000, Tata Tel is charging Rs 25,000 for a wireless connection since it involves installation of an imported equipment called NIU( network interface unit).
Tata Tel, Pani says, also provides valued-added services like calling cards, voice mail, ISDN and centrex. It intends to expand its range by providing public telephony booths, flexible billing systems and use of smart card.
?We are initially installing booths in the city?s new airport terminal and at key centres in Secunderabad.,? Pani said.
Tata Tel has wired the city with a 25-km optic fibre.
