Calcutta, June 5 :
The Paharpur Cooling Towers Ltd (PCTL) is planning to start a new business division for repairing and servicing cooling towers of any make.
The refurbishing job contributed about Rs 15 crore last year to the company?s total turnover, despite a recession in the industry. At present, PCTL has no separate business division for refurbishing other makes.
A senior PCTL official said that spare parts and other accessories for cooling towers have a vast market in the country today, as several industries, set up in the fifties or sixties, need thorough refurbishing of their cooling system.
?This market will grow by leaps and bounds once the recession in the industry is over,? the official said. ?We have so far manufactured spare parts for our own cooling towers. But now we have decided to manufacture those products to any specifications,? the official said.
The official added that PCTL was hence planning a separate division for the purpose, which will only look after the repair and refurbishing jobs, along with marketing of the spare parts and accessories for cooling towers.
PCTL, which is a closely held company of the Calcutta-based Swarups, is expected to record a turnover of Rs 160 crore for the year ended March 1999. The company chairman Mahendra Swarup said the cooling towers market is highly competitive today. ?But we could still maintain our leadership position because our technology and service meet global standards,? he said.
The company has a technical collaboration with the US-based Hudson for the air-cooled heat exchanger. It has also had a similar tieup with Knight Piesold of South Africa for the natural draft cooling towers.
Swarup said these technical tieups have given the company an edge over other competitors and it was trying to increase its market share from the existing 50 per cent.
However, the major concern for the company is that most multinational project contractors favour the cooling tower suppliers of their own countries even if it has a cost disadvantage.
?Cooling towers entail not more than one to two per cent of the total project cost in the power sector. Hence, the contractors do not bother even if cost disadvantages arise in procuring them through imports,? the official said. The company is therefore, looking for sub-contracting from the main supply contractors of the cooling towers.
At present, PCTL is strengthening its operations in Kandla where it has shifted its entire timber related works.
