Calcutta, Aug. 21: Maithon Power Ltd, a 74:26 public-private partnership between Tata Power and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), plans to add 1,320 megawatt (MW) thermal power capacity in Jharkhand. Located near the Maithon dam, the joint venture has a capacity of 1,050MW (two units of 525MW each).
Besides DVC, power from the project is supplied to Delhi, Bengal and Kerala.
The Rs 5,000-crore project had started generating power in 2011. It has generated 7,172 million units in 2015-16 compared with 6,684 million units in 2014-15.
"Expansion at Maithon is going on. There is a plan to add capacity of 1,320MW. Land has been acquired and environmental impact assessment is in progress. Also, coal supply has to be secured," said a source close to the project.
He said the expansion plan was on course, but it could take a few more years for the additional capacity to get commissioned.
Maithon Power has tied up its entire capacity through a power purchase agreement with the Kerala State Electricity Board, which became effective in December last year, the source said.
"This gives an additional impetus to the project to go ahead with its expansion plan," he added.
Maithon's expansion is part of Tata Power's plan to add 6,435MW capacity across the thermal and hydro power sectors in India and overseas.
Besides Jharkhand, the company is setting up additional units in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh.
The company is planning to set up a 1,320MW thermal power plant in Vietnam and add 215MW hydroelectric capacity in Georgia. This is in addition to Tata Power's 682MW capacity addition programme, which is currently underway. Its gross production capacity across various forms of fuel is around 9,100MW.
