Calcutta, March 3: The Lamborghini brand from Volkswagen Group seems to be having a great run in India, garnering a 40 per cent market share in the premium sports car category since its entry in 2012.

In 2016, around 70 units were sold in the premium sports car segment. The latest launch of the flagship Aventador S along with the upcoming entry of the Urus, a high-performance SUV, will further consolidate the German brand's market share in this premium category.

"We hope to double our sales with the Aventador S and Urus when it is launched," Sharad Agarwal, head of Automobili Lamborghini India, said.

"We have already got bookings for the Aventador S in our dealerships," Agarwal added.

The cars are shipped from the only Lamborghini factory at Sant Agota in Italy. In India, the Lamborghini has three outlets in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The premium sports car segment, Agarwal said, has beaten the demonetisation move to grow in double digits in 2016.

According to Agarwal, the segment's growth decelerated between 2011 and 2014 because of spiralling duty and tax structures.

"It was only in 2015 that the segment has seen a positive growth, while in 2016, it has had a double digit growth with sale of 70 cars. Positive macro-economic factors such as growth in GDP and a downward inflation have pushed up market sentiments," said Agarwal.

However, Lamborghini, he added, has witnessed growth even when the segment was down during 2011-2014.

The new Aventador S is a variation of Aventador. "What the Murcielago (the precursor model to Aventador) did for us in 10 years, the Aventador did for us in five years," said Agarwal.

The Aventador contributed 10 per cent to the total sales volume for Lamborghini in the country.

The more affordable Huracan accounted for the rest of the sales. "I am very confident of more than doubling the share of the Aventador family in the Lamborghini India portfolio to 20-25 per cent from the 10 per cent we have today," said Agarwal.
