New Delhi, July 12: Ford today launched its iconic Mustang in the country for Rs 65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Ford Mustang will go on sale in Delhi and Mumbai in the first phase of its launch.

The Mustang will be equipped with a 5.0L V8 petrol engine, churning out a massive 401 PS of peak power. It is capable of reaching a top speed of 250km/hr. Globally, the Mustang is also powered with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which delivers 310 brake horse power, but that will not be sold in India.

"Mustang is more than just a car. It gives you the freedom to express and epitomises the passion and fun-of-driving inherent in all Ford vehicles. The arrival of the Mustang will shine a bright light on the blue oval along with the rest of the Ford range and will help us to demonstrate our potential," Anurag Mehrotra, executive director, marketing, sales & service, Ford India Pvt Ltd, said.

The company had unveiled the car in India on January 29 at the auto expo 2016.

"On our commitment to build a drive for everyone, there's never been a better time at Ford to introduce this iconic car," said Mehrotra.

Mustang will be sold as a completely built unit imported from Ford's Flat Rock assembly plant in the US. Globally, Ford sold close to 1,10,000 Mustangs in 2015, topping all other sports coupè competitors.

As many as 35,300 premium cars were sold last year in the country and it is expected that sales will grow to 87,300 units by 2020. The sector is expected to grow at 15 per cent per annum during 2015-18.

While Mustang has a legacy of over five decades, the company says its brand value was young. "It is not about age but about passion. And the Mustang will bring that passion out as much in a 25-year-old as a 55-year-old," said Mehrotra.

This is the first time Ford has made right-hand-drive versions of the car for markets such as the UK and India.
