Calcutta, Dec. 20: The Andaman and Nicobar circle of Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) will launch its mobile services in Port Blair on December 26. The services will be available under the CellOne brand for post-paid subscribers and Excel for pre-paid users.

“The service will have an initial capacity of 4,000 lines, which will go up by another 1,000 lines after a year,” chief general manager G. S. Srivastava said. BSNL has set up four cell sites in Port Blair for the services.

Port Blair is connected to the mainland via satellite. BSNL also offers WiLL services and has a customer base of 450. “The islands have a teledensity of 9.2 per cent and the main thrust has been on providing communication facilities to its residents,” Srivastava said. “We believe that the revenues will follow.”

The Andaman and Nicobar circle generated around Rs 18 crore last fiscal.
